Effects of the Fourth House – Mother, Home, and Inner Peace (BPHS Chapter 15)

Introduction

The Fourth House (Matri Bhava or Sukha Bhava) in Vedic Astrology governs the mother, heart, emotions, mental peace, domestic comforts, property, vehicles, and education. According to BPHS Chapter 15, the position of the 4th lord influences one’s happiness, real estate, inner stability, and maternal relationship.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

चतुर्थेशो यदि लग्ने सुखी स्यात् स्त्रीप्रियः सदा।
गृहवानी शुभो बुद्धिः पुत्रैः संतोषमृच्छति॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will be happy, fond of women, possess a house, be wise, and content with children.

Shloka 2

स्वस्थाने च चतुर्थेशे सुखवानी धनान्वितः।
मातृप्रीतः सदा धर्मी सर्वलोकप्रपूजितः॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in its own house, the native will be wealthy, fond of the mother, righteous, and respected by all.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे चतुर्थेशे चलसुखविवर्जितः।
भ्रातृवैरसमायुक्तो वाचालो दुःखितो नरः॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 3rd, the native will lack domestic peace, have enmity with siblings, be talkative, and unhappy.

Shloka 4

पंचमस्थे चतुर्थेशे बुद्धिमान् सुभगो नरः।
विद्यावान् सुखसंपन्नो मातृस्नेही प्रजावान्॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 5th, the native will be wise, fortunate, educated, full of comforts, maternal love, and blessed with children.

Shloka 5

षष्ठे स्थिते चतुर्थेशे रोगपीडितमानसः।
मातृवैरसमायुक्तो गृहनाशविनाशकृत्॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 6th, the native will have mental distress, enmity with mother, and face destruction of home/property.

Shloka 6

सप्तमे च चतुर्थेशे पतिस्नेही सुखी भवेत्।
नारीणां विषये लोभी मानसं च विचेष्टितम्॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 7th, the native will have happiness in marriage but may be greedy for women and mentally unstable at times.

Shloka 7

अष्टमे च स्थिते दोषो मातृनाशोऽथवा भयम्।
गृहनाशो विवासश्च सदा क्लेशकरः स्मृतः॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 8th, it may cause loss of mother, fear, destruction of home, or exile, bringing constant distress.

Shloka 8

नवमे चतुर्थेशे धर्मयुक्तः कुलोन्नतिः।
मातृसौख्यसमृद्धिश्च पवित्रः प्रथितो नरः॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 9th, the native will be righteous, from an esteemed lineage, enjoy maternal happiness, and have a pure and reputed character.

Shloka 9

दशमे च चतुर्थेशे कार्यशीलो गृहस्थकृत्।
राजसेवी गुणवान् च बहुसंपद्भविष्यति॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 10th, the native will be industrious, good at managing home affairs, may work for the government, and be endowed with wealth and virtues.

Shloka 10

एकादशे चतुर्थेशे सुखी बान्धववर्धनः।
मातृप्रियः शुभकर्मी स्त्रीप्रियः पराक्रमी॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 11th, the native will be happy, increase his associations, love his mother, perform good deeds, and be valorous and affectionate toward women.

Shloka 11

व्यये च स्थितचतुर्थेशे दुःखशोकसमन्वितः।
मातृवियोगी च सदा गृहनाशकृदालसः॥

Translation: If the 4th lord is in the 12th, the native will be full of sorrow, separated from mother, destroy his home, and be lazy by nature.

Conclusion

BPHS Chapter 15 teaches how the 4th lord’s placement determines domestic peace, mother’s influence, property, and emotional security. A strong 4th lord brings comfort and legacy, while malefic placements can deeply impact one’s heart and home life.
