Effects of the First House – Self, Personality, and Birth (BPHS Chapter 12)

Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra (BPHS) by Maharishi Parāśara.

Introduction

The First House, also called the Lagna Bhava, represents
the self, body, appearance, health, and the general direction of life. According to BPHS Chapter 12, the
placement of the First Lord and various planets in the 1st house reveals the personality, vitality, karma,
and natural tendencies of the native.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

लग्नेभौमेचकोɟपिष्ठेकृ शो रोगी च दुःखी च।
कु बुɣद्धिदुर्दुष्टवृɢत्तिश्च चपिलश्चैव जायते॥

Translation: If Mars is in the Ascendant, the native will be shorttempered, thin, diseased, unhappy, ill-minded, ill-behaved, and unstable.

Shloka 2

लग्नेचन्देसुमधुरः शीतलो मृदुलो नृपि।
शुभशीलो मनस्वी च सोमवान्सुखभाग्भवेत्॥

Translation: If the Moon is in the Ascendant, the native will be sweetspoken, calm, gentle, virtuous, intelligent, and fortunate.

Shloka 3

गुरौ लग्नेसदा सौम्यः स्थूलो दीर्दुः सुखी नरः।
ɟवद्यावान्पिूज्यवान्धɸमर्मिष्ठः पिुत्रसमृɣद्धिमान्॥

Translation: If Jupiter is in the Ascendant, the native will be kind,
well-built, tall, happy, learned, respected, righteous, and blessed with children.

Shloka 4

शुक्रे लग्नेसदा सौंदयर्यंसौम्यता सुरूपिता।
कɟवत्वं नटनृत्यं च रɡसकः कलासंपिदः॥

Translation: If Venus is in the Ascendant, the native will be beautiful,
charming, talented in poetry and arts, and fond of fine things.

Shloka 5

शनौ लग्नेच दुःखा)र्थी कष्टशीलोऽल्पिबुɣद्धिमान्।
वृद्धिव’र्दुः सदा श्लक्ष्’ो दीुर्दुः क;र्दु’ɟवɟक्रयः॥

Translation: If Saturn is in the Ascendant, the native will suffer
hardships, be dull-minded, appear older, be lean, and face obstacles.

Shloka 6

राहौ लग्नेɟवकलवद्भवɟत चान्नदो;युक्तः स्यात्।
दो;युक्तशरीरश्च सदा चञ्चलमानसः॥

Translation: If Rahu is in the Ascendant, the native will have a
defective body or deformity, digestive issues, and a restless mind.

Shloka 7

के तौ लग्नेसदा दीनः दुबर्दुलः पिɟततो भवेत्।
ɟनःस्वः शोकसमायुक्तो ɟनत्यं रोगɟवपिɢत्तिमान्॥

Translation: If Ketu is in the Ascendant, the native will be poor, weak,
miserable, and prone to diseases and suffering.

Shloka 8

स्वस्थानेलग्नेशेसुɜस्थतेच सदा ɜस्थरधनः।
दीार्दुयुः शोभनाकारो धमार्दु)र्दुकु लसंयुतः॥

Translation: If the Ascendant lord is in its own house and well
placed, the native will have lasting wealth, long life, good looks, and be righteous and well-connected.

Shloka 9

लाभस्थे च व्यये वाɟपि लग्नना)ेऽल्पिɟवत्तिवान्।
दुष्टव’र्णोऽल्पिमायुः स्यात् सदा च
व्याɠधपिीɟड़ितः॥

Translation: If the Lagna lord is in the 11th or 12th, the
native will be poor, have bad complexion, short-lived, and suffer from illnesses.

Shloka 10

नीचस्थेपिापिकृ न्तɧस्मन्लग्नेशेव्यसनी नरः।
हीनकायः सदा पिापिी ɟनधर्दुनो व्याɠधपिीɟडितः॥

Translation: If the Lagna lord is debilitated and afflicted by
malefics, the native will be sinful, unhealthy, poor, and indulge in vices.

Shloka 11

स्वोच्चस्थेस्वक्षेत्रगतेलग्नेशेशुभदृग्युतः।
दीार्दुयुः सवर्दुसम्पन्नः सवर्दुलोकɟवनायकः॥

Translation: If the Lagna lord is exalted, in its own sign, and
aspected by benefics, the native will live long, be prosperous, and respected by all.

Conclusion

The First House is the foundation of a person’s chart. Sage Parashara outlines
both the effects of planetary placements in Lagna and the position of the Lagna lord. These principles
remain timeless tools for understanding the native’s appearance, vitality, and karma.
