Effects of the Fifth House – Children, Intellect, and Past Karma (BPHS Chapter 16)

Introduction

The Fifth House (Putra Bhava) in Vedic Astrology rules
over children, intelligence, past-life merit (purva punya), creativity, mantra siddhi, and romance. BPHS
Chapter 16 elaborates on how the placement of the 5th lord influences progeny, knowledge, and one’s
ability to create, love, and express divinely inspired talents.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

पुत्रेशो यɞदि लग्ने सुतवान् सुखभाग्भवेत्।
बुɣद्धिमान् कुलसम्पन्नः ɟप्रियवाक्सत्यवाद्यɟप॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will have
children, enjoy happiness, be intelligent, noble, sweet-spoken, and truthful.

Shloka 2

धनस्थे पुत्रनाथे स् याद्धिनाढ्यो दिीर्घजीɟववान्।
सुतɟप्रियः सदिा धमर्मी सुव’ार्घलङ्कृतो भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 2nd, the native will be wealthy,
long-lived, fond of children, virtuous, and adorned with gold and ornaments.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे सुतेशे च भ्र ातृपुत्रɟववृɣद्धिकृत्।
सुबुɣद्धिबर्घलसम्पन्नो भवेत् कीɷतर्तिसमɥÊवतः॥</ blockquote>

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 3rd, the native will increase the
well-being of siblings and children, be wise, strong, and famous.

Shloka 4

चतुथर्घस्थे सुतेशे च पुत्रवान् सुखसंयुतः।
मातृप्रिीतः कुलधÊयो गृहे सदिा सुखी भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 4th, the native will have children,
enjoy maternal affection, family wealth, and home-based comforts.

Shloka 5

पंचमस्थे सुतेशे च पुत्रलाभो ɟनɢश्चितः सदिा।
बुɣद्धिवान् सुभगो धमर्मी स् मर’शीलो भवेत् नरः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 5th itself, the native will certainly
have children, be intelligent, fortunate, religious, and have good memory.

Shloka 6

षष्ठस्थे च सुतेशे च पुत्रहाɟनः प्रि जाभयम्।
दुष्ट वृɢत्तिः सदिा ɜक्लष्टः शत्रुपीडासमɥÊवतः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 6th, the native may face fear or
loss regarding children, have poor conduct, and suffer due to enemies.

Shloka 7

सप्तमे च सुतेशे च सुखी पुत्रसमɥÊवतः।
पत्नीɟप्रियः सदिा धमर्मी ɟवनयी ɟवनयोज्ज्वलः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 7th, the native will be happy with
children, fond of spouse, religious, humble, and graceful.

Shloka 8

अष्टमे सुतनाथे च पुत्रदिोषसमɥÊवतः।
स्त्र ीदिोषयुक्तो दिीनश्चि कष्टजीवी च दु ःɤखतः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 8th, the native may face troubles
related to children, suffer through relationships, live in poverty, and be sorrowful.

Shloka 9

नवमे सुतनाथे च भाग्ययुक्तः सुताɥÊवतः।
धाɸमर्तिकः कुलजातश्चि स् वाध्यायरɟतमान् नरः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 9th, the native will be fortunate,
blessed with children, religious, of good family, and fond of self-study and scripture.

Shloka 10

दिशमे च सुतेशे च कमर्घशीलः सुतɟप्रियः।
राजसेवी महाभाग्यं लभते पुण्यकमर्घकृत्॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 10th, the native will be
hardworking, love children, work in royal or high offices, and perform meritorious deeds.

Shloka 11

एकादिशे सुतनाथे सुतलाभसमɥÊवतः।
धनधाÊयसमृɣद्धिश्चि सत्संगɟप्रिय एव च॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 11th, the native will gain children,
have abundant wealth and food, and enjoy good company.

Shloka 12

व्यये सुतनाथे च सुतदुःखसमɥÊवतः।
मानसशोकयुक्तश्चि क् लेशकमर्घसमɥÊवतः॥

Translation: If the 5th lord is in the 12th, the native will suffer due to
children, experience mental distress, and face troubles in his efforts.

Conclusion

Chapter 16 of BPHS teaches us how the 5th lord determines one’s ability to
receive and nurture children, knowledge, and creative blessings. When the 5th lord is strong and well-
placed, the native gains wisdom and good fortune; when afflicted, it leads to loss and sorrow.
