Effects of the Eighth House – Longevity, Obstacles, and Mysticism (BPHS Chapter 19)

Introduction

The Eighth House (Ayush Bhava or Randhra Bhava) governs longevity, sudden events, accidents, inheritance, occult knowledge, and transformation. In BPHS Chapter 19, Sage Parāśara explains how the placement of the 8th lord influences lifespan, mysterious experiences, and karmic intensity in life.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

रन्ध्रेशो यदि लग्ने सदा रोगसमन्वितः।
दीनः स्याल्पायुषो वापि दुःखदुःखसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will be sickly, miserable, short-lived, and surrounded by suffering.

Shloka 2

धनस्थे च स्थिते तस्य मृत्युभयं सदा भवेत्।
धनहानिश्च सततं दुःखसंततिसंयुतः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 2nd, the native will have constant fear of death, financial loss, and face ongoing sorrows.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे च रन्ध्रेशे दीर्घायुः पराक्रमी।
भ्रातृहिंसा प्रभूतश्च महायशसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 3rd, the native will be long-lived, courageous, possibly hurt siblings, and gain great fame.

Shloka 4

चतुर्थस्थे च रन्ध्रेशे मातृदुःखसमन्वितः।
गृहपीडाश्च बहवः क्लेशवृद्धिः सदा भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 4th, the native will face grief through mother, house troubles, and increasing personal afflictions.

Shloka 5

पंचमस्थे च रन्ध्रेशे सुतदोषसमन्वितः।
मानसशोकयुक्तश्च बुद्धिदोषसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 5th, the native will have difficulties with children, suffer mental sorrow, and lack intelligence.

Shloka 6

षष्ठे स्थिते च रन्ध्रेशे रिपुहिंसासमन्वितः।
दीर्घायुः स्यात्सदा वीरः शत्रुहन्ता पराक्रमी॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 6th, the native will be long-lived, brave, aggressive toward enemies, and victorious in conflicts.

Shloka 7

सप्तमे च रन्ध्रेशे पत्नीदोषसमन्वितः।
शुचिर्न स्यात् सदा क्लिष्टो विघ्नयुक्तश्च जायते॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 7th, the native will have problems with spouse, be impure, troubled, and face obstacles in partnerships.

Shloka 8

स्वस्थानगतो वापि बलवान् सुभगे स्थले।
रन्ध्रेशो दीर्घजीवी स्यात्सर्वसंपन्नता भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in its own or exalted sign and well-placed, the native will live long and enjoy all prosperity.

Shloka 9

दशमे रन्ध्रनाथे च कर्महीनः सदा नरः।
विपत्तिप्रचुरो क्लिष्टो नास्तिकः कर्मवर्जितः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 10th, the native may lack profession, face frequent failures, suffering, and may be non-religious.

Shloka 10

एकादशे रन्ध्रनाथे लाभनाशसमन्वितः।
मित्रवैरसमायुक्तो क्लेशयुक्तश्च जायते॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 11th, the native will face loss of gains, conflicts with friends, and constant discomforts.

Shloka 11

व्यये रन्ध्रपतौ चौर्ये प्रवृत्तिः पापकर्मकृत्।
दीनो विपन्नो दुःखार्तो व्यसनी च सदा नरः॥

Translation: If the 8th lord is in the 12th, the native may engage in theft, bad deeds, live in poverty, face hardships, and addictions.

The Eighth House reveals one’s karmic load and hidden transformations. Sage Parāśara emphasizes that benefic placement of the 8th lord can bless longevity and mystic powers, while afflictions lead to sorrow, losses, and psychological upheaval.
