Dharma, Artha, Kama & Moksha Trikonas in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, life is divided into four core aims or Purusharthas: Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation). Each is represented by a specific Trikona (triad of houses):

  • Dharma Trikona: 1st, 5th, 9th Houses
  • Artha Trikona: 2nd, 6th, 10th Houses
  • Kama Trikona: 3rd, 7th, 11th Houses
  • Moksha Trikona: 4th, 8th, 12th Houses

To understand these fully, one must explore past life karma and the journey of the Jiva (soul) through the birth chart.

Planetary Representations

  • Sun (Ravi): Soul (Atma)
  • Moon (Chandra): Mind (Manas)
  • Mars (Mangal): Body (Sharira)
  • Mercury (Budha): Intelligence, Subconscious
  • Jupiter (Guru): Life Spark (Jiva)

The Ascendant (Lagna) represents this life; the 12th house signifies the immediate past life.

Mother and Moon: The First Karma

The soul chooses its mother, marking the first prarabdha karma. The 4th house (mother/womb) is ruled by the Moon, making Chandra crucial as a bridge between Atma and Sharira. Moon reflects past-life desires (vasanas).

Origin of Life: 9th House and Ketu

The soul (Jiva) begins its journey in the 9th house, where the Mula Nakshatra resides, ruled by Ketu. Mula means origin. Moksha is attained when the soul detaches from the Moon’s grip.

Dharma Trikona: Purpose of Life

  • 9th House (Sagittarius) – Jiva’s origin; Jupiter’s Moolatrikona
  • 1st House (Aries) – Body; Mars’ domain
  • 5th House (Leo) – Atma; Sun’s domain and one’s Ishta Devata

These houses form the backbone of one’s spiritual mission.

Artha Trikona: Manifested Karma

  • 2nd House (Taurus) – Family karma; Moon’s exaltation
  • 6th House (Virgo) – Service, enemies; Budha’s exaltation
  • 10th House (Capricorn) – Karma; Saturn’s domain, but illusionary

From 10th, the 9th house is the 6th = Shadripu (inner enemies). Thus, karma stems from desires and inner battles.

Kama Trikona: Desires and Traps

  • 3rd House (Gemini) – Efforts; Mercury
  • 7th House (Libra) – Relationships; Saturn exalted
  • 11th House (Aquarius) – Gains and greed; Saturn’s domain

Saturn traps the Jiva through unending desires and attachments.

Moksha Trikona: Liberation

  • 4th House – Mother/womb; Moon’s realm
  • 8th House – Sudden transformation; death-rebirth cycle
  • 12th House – Sanchita karma; spiritual detachment

5th and 12th houses are in 6/8 relationship—ego vs surrender. The soul repeats karmic themes unless detached.

Conclusion

This journey from 9th (Jiva) to 1st (Sharira) and eventually 12th (Moksha) shows the profound cycle of life. In Bhṛgu Nandi Nadi, planets in the 9th show repeated karma. Liberation comes when the Jiva transcends Moon, Saturn, and Mercury’s hold.
