Effects of the Twelfth House – Loss, Liberation, and Expenditure (BPHS Chapter 23)

Introduction

The Twelfth House (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenses, loss, isolation, moksha (liberation), foreign lands, sleep, donation, and secret enemies. BPHS Chapter 23 outlines how the 12th lord’s placement reveals one’s detachment or bondage, and how one experiences both material and spiritual loss or freedom.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

व्ययेशो यदि लग्ने सदा व्ययसमन्वितः।
दरिद्रकः सुखहीनो दुःखशोकार्थसंयुतः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will always face expenses, live in poverty, lack happiness, and suffer sorrow and misfortune.

Shloka 2

धनस्थे व्ययनाथे च धनहानिः सदा भवेत्।
ऋणपीडासमन्विष्टो दुःखितो मानसी सदा॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 2nd, the native will constantly lose wealth, be burdened with debts, and suffer mental unrest.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे व्ययनाथे साहसी व्ययकर्मकृत्।
पुण्यात्मा धर्मयुक्तश्च गूढचर्योत्तमान्वितः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 3rd, the native will be courageous, perform hidden or sacrificial acts, be virtuous and religious.

Shloka 4

चतुर्थस्थे व्ययनाथे मातृवियोगसंयुतः।
गृहविनाशसमायुक्तः शयने दुःखभाग्भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 4th, the native may be separated from the mother, lose property, and suffer discomfort in sleeping or resting.

Shloka 5

पंचमे व्ययनाथे च सुतदुःखसमन्वितः।
मानसशोकयुक्तश्च कलहप्रिय एव च॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 5th, the native will suffer due to children, have mental distress, and enjoy quarrels or disputes.

Shloka 6

षष्ठस्थे व्ययनाथे च रिपुहिंसासमन्वितः।
ऋणयुक्तो व्यसनी च सदा व्ययकृतः स्मृतः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 6th, the native will harm enemies, be burdened with loans, addicted, and constantly spend resources.

Shloka 7

सप्तमे व्ययनाथे च व्यययुक्तः पतिव्रतः।
स्त्रैणः शयने सौख्ययुक्तः विदेशयायी सदा॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 7th, the native will have expenditure due to spouse, enjoy bed comforts, and may travel or settle abroad.

Shloka 8

अष्टमे व्ययनाथे च व्यययुक्तः सदा नरः।
गूढकर्मरतश्चैव रोगयुक्तो विपत्तिमान्॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 8th, the native will spend excessively, be involved in secret acts, suffer diseases, and face misfortunes.

Shloka 9

नवमे व्ययनाथे च भाग्यवृद्धिसमन्वितः।
धर्मात्मा तीर्थयात्री च त्यागशीलो भवेत् सदा॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 9th, the native will be fortunate, religious, undertake pilgrimages, and have a sacrificing nature.

Shloka 10

दशमे व्ययनाथे च कर्मविनाशकारकः।
सेवकः स्यात्सदा क्लिष्टो व्यययुक्तः सदा नरः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 10th, the native’s profession may face obstacles, he may serve others and struggle under constant expenditure.

Shloka 11

एकादशे व्ययनाथे लाभहानिः सदा भवेत्।
दरिद्रः खिन्नमानश्च नित्यं व्ययकृतो नरः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in the 11th, the native will lose profits, be poor, mentally disturbed, and constantly expend resources.

Shloka 12

स्वस्थाने व्ययनाथे च व्यययुक्तो मुनिर्भवेत्।
त्यागी शांतचित्तश्च योगसिद्धिं लभेन्नरः॥

Translation: If the 12th lord is in its own house, the native will be detached like a sage, peaceful-minded, and may attain yogic or spiritual siddhis.

Conclusion

The Twelfth House, though associated with losses, is deeply spiritual and vital for final liberation. A well-placed 12th lord can bring solitude, spiritual growth, and moksha. Malefic placements, however, cause drain of resources, relationships, and peace.
