Effects of the Tenth House – Career, Karma, and Status (BPHS Chapter 21)

Introduction

The Tenth House (Karma Bhava) represents career, profession, authority, public image, reputation, and father’s influence. BPHS Chapter 21 reveals how the 10th lord’s placement governs one’s work life, recognition, and contribution to society.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

दशमेशो यदि लग्ने सदा कर्मरतिः शुभः।
राजसेवी नृपश्रेष्ठः प्रसिद्धो धर्मसंयुतः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will always be active in work, serve the king or government, be famous, and righteous.

Shloka 2

धनस्थे दशमेशे च धनाढ्यः कर्मनिष्ठवान्।
प्रियवाक्सत्यवादी च कुलधर्मप्रवर्तकः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 2nd, the native will be wealthy, work-oriented, sweet-spoken, truthful, and a promoter of family traditions.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे दशमेशे पराक्रमी दृढो नृप।
वाक्समर्थः कुशलः स्यात् स्ववृत्त्याऽर्जनकर्मकृत्॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 3rd, the native will be courageous, skilled in speech, and earn livelihood through self-effort or talent.

Shloka 4

चतुर्थस्थे दशमेशे सुखी गृहपतिः सदा।
कर्मनिष्ठः शीलसम्पन्नः मातृप्रीतः प्रशासकः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 4th, the native will be a happy householder, devoted to duty, morally strong, and fond of the mother.

Shloka 5

पंचमे दशमेशे च सुतयुक्तः प्रियंवदः।
कर्मकुशलः धर्मात्मा भाग्यवान् यशसां निधिः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 5th, the native will have children, speak sweetly, be skillful in work, virtuous, lucky, and highly respected.

Shloka 6

षष्ठे दशमनाथे च कर्मनाशो न संशयः।
दुर्बुद्धिः क्लेशयुक्तश्च सेवकः सदा नरः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 6th, the native will lose work, lack intelligence, suffer hardships, and live like a servant.

Shloka 7

सप्तमे दशमनाथे पापयुक्ते न संशयः।
क्लेशः स्त्रीसंगवर्जित्वं कार्यहानिः सदा भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 7th with malefics, the native will face troubles, loss of marital joy, and continuous obstacles in profession.

Shloka 8

अष्टमे दशमनाथे न स्याद्धर्मो न कर्मकृत्।
दारिद्र्यं च क्लेशयुक्तं विफलाभिलषितं फलम्॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 8th, the native may abandon duty, lack religion, suffer poverty, and face unfulfilled desires.

Shloka 9

नवमे दशमेशे च कर्मनिष्ठः सदा नरः।
धर्मात्मा पितृप्रियः श्रीमान् भाग्यवान् यशस्विनः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 9th, the native will be devoted to karma, righteous, loved by father, fortunate, and glorious.

Shloka 10

दशमे दशमेशे च स्वोच्चस्थे स्वगृहे तथा।
कर्मकुशलो नृपश्रेष्ठो महाश्रीः पावनः स्मृतः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 10th in exaltation or own sign, the native will be highly skilled in profession, a leader, wealthy, and pure-hearted.

Shloka 11

एकादशे दशमेशे लाभवृद्धिसमन्वितः।
कर्मयोगी सुखी च स्यात् प्रियवाक्यसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 11th, the native will grow in profession, be hard-working, happy, and speak pleasantly.

Shloka 12

व्यये दशमेशगः पापयुक्तो विशेषतः।
विपत्तियुक्तो दुःखार्थो कर्महीनो न संशयः॥

Translation: If the 10th lord is in the 12th and afflicted, the native will face misfortunes, sorrow, and may have no profession or clear path.

Conclusion

The 10th house is the pillar of karma and destiny. BPHS teaches that a well-placed 10th lord brings dignity, stability, and fulfillment through profession. Malefic influences disrupt this flow, causing frustration and setbacks in work life.
