Effects of the Ninth House – Fortune, Dharma, and Father (BPHS Chapter 20)

Introduction

The Ninth House (Dharma Bhava) governs higher learning, dharma (righteousness), luck, guru (spiritual teachers), long journeys, and one’s father. In BPHS Chapter 20, Sage Parāśara describes how the placement of the 9th lord impacts one’s fate, faith, and fortune.

Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra  Shlokas with Translation and Interpretation

Shloka 1

धर्मेशो यदि लग्ने सदा भाग्यसमन्वितः।
वेदवित्तपोयुक्तो दीर्घायुः सुखभाग्भवेत्॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the Ascendant, the native will be fortunate, learned in scriptures, spiritual, long-lived, and happy.

Shloka 2

धर्मेशो धनगे भावे धनाढ्यः सुभगो नरः।
धर्मशीलः कुलश्रेष्ठो वाक्प्रगल्भो विचक्षणः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 2nd, the native will be wealthy, handsome, virtuous, born in a noble family, eloquent, and wise.

Shloka 3

तृतीयस्थे धर्मनाथे भ्रातृवैरसमन्वितः।
भाग्यनाशो भवेत् तस्य धर्मत्यागसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 3rd, the native will have enmity with siblings, loss of fortune, and give up righteous conduct.

Shloka 4

चतुर्थस्थे धर्मनाथे सुखी धर्मपरायणः।
मातृप्रियः कुलश्रेष्ठो विद्यायुक्तो जितेन्द्रियः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 4th, the native will be happy, devoted to dharma, love his mother, be noble, educated, and self-controlled.

Shloka 5

पंचमे धर्मनाथे च पुत्रवान् सुभगो नरः।
धार्मिकः सत्यवादी च भाग्यवांश्च यशस्विनः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 5th, the native will have children, be fortunate, virtuous, truthful, and well-known.

Shloka 6

षष्ठस्थे धर्मनाथे च पापकर्मसमन्वितः।
धर्मत्यागी नृशंसश्च दुःखदुःखसमन्वितः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 6th, the native will engage in sinful deeds, be cruel, give up religion, and live in sorrow.

Shloka 7

सप्तमे धर्मनाथे च धर्मयुक्तः सदा नरः।
सप्तपदीसुखं भुङ्क्ते भार्याप्रीतः सदा सुखी॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 7th, the native will be righteous, enjoy marital happiness, and have a loving relationship with spouse.

Shloka 8

अष्टमे धर्मनाथे च भाग्यह्रासो भवेत् ध्रुवम्।
पित्रृवियोगो दुःखार्तो व्यसनश्च प्रजावर्जितः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 8th, the native will face loss of fortune, be separated from father, suffer sorrow, and may lack progeny.

Shloka 9

नवमे धर्मनाथे च स्वबलस्थे च सुभगे।
दीर्घायुः सर्वसंपन्नो धर्मशास्त्रविशारदः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in its own or exalted sign in the 9th, the native will be long-lived, wealthy, and well-versed in scriptures.

Shloka 10

दशमे धर्मनाथे च व्यावसायी सदा नरः।
धर्मयुक्तः गुणग्राही भाग्यवान् सर्वसम्मतः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 10th, the native will be industrious, righteous, virtuous, fortunate, and respected by all.

Shloka 11

एकादशे धर्मनाथे लाभभागी सदा नरः।
सर्वविद्याविशारदः सदा धर्मपरायणः॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 11th, the native will be gainful, scholarly in all branches of knowledge, and devoted to religion.

Shloka 12

व्यये धर्मनाथे च सदा धर्मविहीनकृत्।
पित्रृदुःखसमायुक्तः भाग्यहीनश्च जायते॥

Translation: If the 9th lord is in the 12th, the native will lack religion, suffer due to father, and be unfortunate.

Conclusion

The Ninth House is the pillar of dharma and fortune. BPHS affirms that a strong and well-placed 9th lord brings lasting virtue, wisdom, prosperity, and blessings from father and gurus. Its weakness may result in loss of fortune and deviation from righteous paths.
